I just moved and I'm working on decorating my house, but I'm having a really hard time deciding on what to do for a kitchen table.
The way the room is designed is so that there is one space, about 36 ft. long providing the kitchen, area for a kitchen table and then the family room. The only thing that divides the kitchen area from the family room is the fact that the kitchen has tile and the family room has carpet. Now, the problem is that in my kitchen I have a lighter colored maple cabinet, I believe it is often referred to as honey, but I'm not positive. When I was decorating for the family room I knew that I wanted a large media center to house my tv and other things. The only color I could find them in, other than oak (which wouldn't have worked with the style I have) was a dark cherry. So, no I'm very concerned about being able to make the transition from the kitchen table to the family room media center and somehow getting the table to work with both rooms.
The only thing I have thought of was a glass table. The only problem is that I can only find glass tables in round sizes instead of rectangle, which I'm not sure if it would work right. The kitchen itself is about 18 ft. long and the area where the table would sit is about 10ft. 8in.

The bar sets in the same area as the table, so I'd like to get them to match as well if I can.

Tiles: Kind of an orange and teracota color, chosen to match the maple cupboards.
I looked at some of the cherry tables when I was at some furniture styles and the only concern is that the cherry won't look right since it would be right next to my maple cupboards. The kitchen is in eat in style kitchen, so the table would be closest to the maple cupboards and the dark cherry media center would be about 10ft. away or so.
I'm not looking for anything too fancy, just something that would tie the rooms together and look nice.

You might want to look for a table that is two toned, maybe something like this

I know the colors might not be exactly what you need, but just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. You could get a table with a honey top, and more cherry toned on the bottom. And please please please keep in mind that your wood tones do not have to match exactly. Another way you could incorporate the two is maybe get a honey colored table, and use leather parson-looking chairs in a darker tone to bring in the darker cherry of the entertainment center, or vice versa, you could use a cherry toned table with some leather honey colored chairs. Personally I'm not a fan of the Belmont piece, from what you described, it seems like that would be throwing in another unmatched piece. If all else fails, get a honey toned table and chair set, then get some dark woven wood (maybe bamboo) place mats, a dark wood bowl for the center, and some dark chair cushions to tie in the colors.

Is this cat ever going to learn to stay off of the kitchen table?!?

My fiance brouht a kitten home about 2 months ago because we had wanted our daughters to have a pet. Every time I put the girls at the table to eat, the cat's always up there trying to get food off of plates, or the highchair, or drinking out of the kids cups. She gets fed and watered regularly..but I guess our food is more appealing. Is there anything I can do to train her to stay off the table? Or is she never going to learn? I'm starting to give up hope on it.

Kitchen tables are wonderful from a cat's point of view. There, their favorite people are at eye level and there's food. Since she's already had a taste of the goodies on the table, you probably need to just put her elsewhere when the kids are eating. After meals, clear the table and counters. Don't leave any food out. A tall cat tree would be a wise investment. These are engineered towards being very attractive to cats with different levels to jump on, posts to scratch, and being high enough the cat can see all over the room. Most cats prefer these to an empty table or counters. The added plus is the scratching posts which serve better than furniture for sharpening claws. Squirt bottles done improperly (when the cat knows it's you spraying) are ineffective and will only cause the cat to become stressed, which could result in even more bad behavior.
Some human foods are toxic to cats so be careful about the kids giving her food off their plates. Here's a list of some toxic human foods.
