I have gorgeous new granite counter tops with plenty of space, but I want to know what I should keep out (i.e. appliances, etc). It is a fairly modern-looking kitchen with stainless appliances and new smaller appliances such as a toaster, mixer, etc. to coordinate. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should leave out/display, etc. I am not into girly/frilly looking kitchens. Pictures and/or links to websites would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Only put appliances on the counter you use absolutely every day, like a toaster or coffeepot. However, if you have something cool looking like a complicated espresso machine, leave that out, too.
Think about your "plan". Do you want all your counter items to "match" or do you want an eclectic mix of modern items?
Leave the utensils in a drawer. Have a bowl of some sort of shelf-stable food out in a special large glass bowl. Green apples? Artichokes?
Do you want glass jars with food like beans or spaghetti? Do you want some stainless canisters? Do you want anything "antique" - maybe only one thing like an old weathervane. Visit a large indoor antique shop with lots of individual booths and see what strikes your fancy. Old bar stools? (Or the new ones with tractor seats?) Old lighting fixtures? One set of beautiful vintage yellow-ware bowls?

I never picked out any 'fine china'....as long as the dishes are pretty, match each other with no damage, and suit my purpose I can't see wasting good money on some expensive buy per setting bunch of plates....
I like simple....I have a full service for 16 in the Tea Rose Pfaltzgraff pattern including matching serving dishes, platters, canisters, spoon rest, sugar & creamer, gravy boat, utensil crock, butter dish, etc with matching pale pink glassware.......
I have a vintage McCoy set for eight including serving dishes, canisters, cookie jar, yada yada in
deep glazed brown with a cream 'drip' edging....and restaurant style 'jelly jar style glassware.Or I use my colbalt blue glassware.
I have a vintage everday set in enamel splatterwear on metal ) in blue and red...with accessories including a coffee 'boiler' (think Little House on the Prarie grannyware) I use my heavy cobalt blue glassware set with them.
And I have a set of red banded white Corningware for everyday that go well with my retro kitchen and it's coca-cola collectables since my granny ware is enamel over metal and can NOT be used in the microwave.....and of course two sets of coca-cola glassware (1/2 with handles, 1/2 without)....
I love my sets....the first two I use for Holidays, completely changing out the pieces on display when called for...my grannyware & corning ware are for kitchen/casual use...
oh, there's the set for pinics/deck...good quality melamine in white & grass green with heavy matching frosted plastic glassware and 'silverware' in bright grass green.
The Corningware is new..the other pieces I have had for many, many years and have slowly added to the collection, especially the vintage McCoy set....and the grannyware. You need to hit flea markets and 'antique' malls for those pieces if you want authentic however I have used Mark's Treasure chest
on line because he is very reliable with quality and his prices are good.....
My table I am never bored with I get compliments all the time and I never spend a small fortune on any of it.......I prefer casual entertaining..I save the formal for going 'out' to events, weddings, etc....
If I ever decide to collect more, I will look to vintage Fiesta ware...would look great with my vintage milkglass collection (Fenton, mostly)
