how much does groceries and furniture cost in beverly hills , california, usa?

estimate the cost
for four people

Answer
It all depends on the family and their needs, desires and budget. One family might prefer to do their shopping at high-end grocery stores like Gelson's and have extravagant taste in furniture, and another that is the same size and also living in Beverly Hills could buy the bulk of their necessities at Costco and IKEA and spend considerably less. My mom, stepdad, four younger siblings and I live in Beverly Hills, and we as well as most families we know buy our groceries from a range of stores rather than exclusively shopping at luxury or budget places. We most often shop at the Trader Joe's in Weho, Whole Foods, Ralph's or Gelson's. I'm not sure how much we spend per month on groceries, but I'm speculating that it would be around $1300 on average for a family of four in Beverly Hills not including lunches at school or dining out.

In my economics class a couple of years ago we studied the consumer expenditures for the major metropolitans in the US, and the average family at the time of the study in 2006 with a household income lesser than $70,000 in the greater Los Angeles area spent around $700 per month, and households with incomes greater than that but lesser than $100,000 spent around $900. Once again, that's one groceries alone. Considering that the average household income is considerably higher in Beverly Hills, it was estimated that the average family there spent $1100 then, so that's why I'm guessing $1200-1300 now.

It's very hard to tell you about the price of furniture without even knowing the size of the house / apartment. A set designer who is a friend of my ex-boyfriend's family recommended that he shop at the furniture stores on Western in Korea Town when he needed to furnish his first-ever apartment, and he was able to get everything for a few thousand dollars. The quality was better than what you'd find at IKEA, but still really affordable for college students like him. Families often shop there as well. On the other side of the spectrum are the stores at the Pacific Design Center and on Robertson and Melrose where a single dining room chair can cost a small fortune. So, depending on where you go and how big your place will be, you could end up spending anywhere from $3000 to several hundred thousand.
