1- Fatty Arbuckle, Actor. Arbuckle appeared in 153 films during the years of 1909 - 1923. He acheived nationwide celebrity in the late teens and early twenties for his appearances in the Keystone Cops films (among others), but his career hit a snag one fateful labor day. The trial of Fatty Arbuckle in the murder of Virginia
Rappe was considered the first, and probablly most infamous of celebrity scandals involving Actors in Hollywood. Rappe was notorious for her wild behavior, promiscuous sexual habits, and her frequent abortions. She had had an abortion not much longer than a week before the party. It hadn't gone well, and is most probably the cause of the ruptured bladder which caused her death. She attended the party with her friend Maude Delmont. Delmont made a living by framing high powered men, mostly politicians, in sex scandals. Rappe had collapsed in Arbuckle's bathroom, and he found her as he was getting ready to leave for a sight-seeing trip. He brought her into his room, put her on his bed, and tried to revive her by rubbing ice cubes on her chest. It was at this time that Maude Delmont came in, and found the them. She asked what was going on, Arbuckle told her, and she offered her help. After a short time, they got several of the party-goers to help move Rappe to another room. She died a few days later. It wasn't until after her death that Delmont claimed she witnessed Arbuckle raping Rappe. She said that she had seen Arbuckle drag Rappe into he bedroom, and that she had heard screaming, and when she tried to get into the room the door was locked. No other person at the party supported her story. None said that they saw Arbuckle drag Rappe into the room, or that they heard screams. There were a few witnesses later that surface, corroborating Delmont's story, but it was later revealed that they were threatened into lying by the prosecution. Delmont never testified, soon the threatened witnesses were revealed, and a few of the star witnesses quickly confessed their statements were false and fled the country. No doctor that examined Rappe ever found any evidence of rape. This where the wine bottle rape rumor came in, since her insides appeared to be ripped apart, but the wounds were too old to have originated that night. No accusation of such an assault was ever brought up in court. His career was over, although he was eventually fully acquitted of the act after three trials. Now, Arbuckle's guilt isn't even speculated anymore. It is widely believed, and has been since he was acquitted, the Arbcuckle was innocent. The jury that acquitted him even issued a statement apologizing to Arbuckle for the ridiculous charges brought against him.

2- Lana Turner, Actress. While in a heated fight with her boyfriend--notorious mobster Johnny--Stompanato, he threatened to kill her. Listening in the kitchen was Turner's 14 year old daughter, Cheryl, who picked up a 10" knife then ran into the room and stabbed Stompanato in the stomach. Stompanato died hours later and the scandal continues to this day. Cheryl was aquitted of murder charges when the court decided it was a justifiable homicide.
3- Peg Entwistle, Actress. Though not a well known actress while alive, Peg Entwistle leaped into Hollywood folk lore on September 8, 1932. Distraught over a failing career and in need of sending a message to the studios, Peg climbed the H in the Hollywood sign and jumped off it to her death. This is the reason that the fence got put up around it.
4- Errol Flynn, Actor. Errol Flynn had a reputation for all sorts of crazy behavior. He was charged with having sex with a 14 year old girl on his yacht but was aquitted. The most famous scandal involved the body of his friend, legendary actor John Barrymore, whose corpse was stolen from a morgue by Flynn's drunken posse. They took the body and placed it in a chair at Errol's house so that when he opened the door he'd be greeted by John just sitting there smiling like old times. Flynn found the cold visitor straight away, but so did the newsmen and consequently the public.
5- Lucille Ball, Actress. Lucille Ball attended a communist party meeting and supposedly signed herself up. Lucille Ball went on stage one night after this scandal broke but before they began broadcasting Desi Arnaz addressed the studio audience and defended his wife against the allegations. The allegations were most likely true, but the public forgave her. The government did not, and today it remains a topic of debate as to exactly why her show was cancelled with many people believing that the goverment used the FCC to take her off our televisions for good.
