AMTRAK Cardinal 51 New York to Chicago.
Booked a Sleeper bedroom on Cardinal 51 from NYC to Chicago with my 85 year old Mom. Sheâs always wanted to sleep on a train so this was the first leg of our trip to California. Got to Penn Station at 6AM for a 6:45 departure. As soon as we sat down in the first class lounge the train was ready to board so we followed our red cap down the escalator to our Bedroom B and were greeted by our train attendant, Will. The Cardinal train is an older train with Viewliner cars for the sleepers. This means that the sleeping bedroom has high ceiling and double windows so that when you are in the top bunk you can look out at night. The compartment is very small and the only place to store suitcases is at the very top of the toilet/shower. But it is up so high I canât imagine that anyone can reach a heavy bag up there. Will was kind enough to stow our bags in the vestibule for the duration of the trip. The dining car was open for breakfast and headed that way. For each meal (meals are included in sleepers) we sat with a different couple, all interesting people. Will came though the car to announce the call for each meal. Itâs a bit like going back in time. When we were ready to go to bed all we had to do was ask Will to change our room over into upper and lower bunks. At that point there is no room at all to move around and Mom and I had quite a few laughs trying to maneuver around the ladder to the upper bunk, the door to the toilet and the only chair (which folds up to get into the toilet. We have read that the handicapped room is the most spacious room on the sleeper (there are only 3 bedrooms on the Cardinal) and it is much larger but there are not two seats at the windowâ¦just one long bench. So if you both want to sit by the window to gaze out Rooms A or B are your best bets. The scenery is interesting all the way but heading east to west Ohio and Indiana and most of West Virginia will be in darkness. Food was good but service was quite slow and relaxed in the dining car. We did tip both the servers in the dining car and the attendant $10 to $15 per day. We started in NY with only 5 cars on the train. Overnight two more cars were added. All in all this was great fun. We are off on the California Zephyr next...
