My cousin and I want to offer our services as caterers for small events (such as birthday parties and showers; weddings and funerals would be out of our range). Can anyone who has experience offer suggestions or general advice? She and I work well together in the kitchen and often make food for various family parties, but what equipment do we need to take our show on the road, so to speak? I realize there's more to it than just cooking.

First you need a kitchen that's approved by the health department. This must be a commercial kitchen, and can't be the one in your home. Some places rent out the use of their kitchens to such small catering services and will take care of the inspections. You'll need a DBA (doing business as), LLC, or the like, and most likely have to pass ServeSafe or some other form of foodservice/sanitation training. Some form of general liability insurance is also recommended.
Equipment wise you'll need large pots and pans, an industrial mixer, etc. Probably at least 3-5 chafing dishes and plates, chargers, linens, flatware, glasses and the like for the number of people you expect to be serving, plus about 25% more to account for breakage and loss. Also large round, or rectangular banquet tables, coffee serving ware and a coffee or espresso machine.
If you want to serve alcohol as well your costs go way up, especially for licensing and insurance. Otherwise you can probably get started for two or three thousand dollars. The hardest part is getting kitchen space, after that it's hard work, and lots of self promotion. Good luck!

What do you think of glass dining room tables?

I have a small dining room, so someone suggested I get a glass dining room table so it appears to take up less space.
But someone else said that it is weird to be able to look at people's legs/feet through the glass while you are eating.
Any ideas or opinions on this interior design case ?

I hate them! You have to clean them every day, they get fingerprints or dog boogers all over them (i clean my doors and windows everyday, i hate fingerprints and dog boogers)
they sell small tables that aren't glass that would fit just fine. i typed in "Small Kitchen Tables" in the Yahoo! search engine and there are tons of cute ones.
