Q. My boyfriend and I will be going on a Carnival Cruise (Western Caribbean) on December 15th for 7 days. We cruised once before with Norwegian, and we are not familiar with set dining times as NCL is free-style cruise, where you eat wherever you want, whenever it pleases you. We loved the system, but now have questions about Carnival's set times for dinner.
Should we switch to YTD or keep our 8:15 dinner time? Keep in mind that we want to see evening shows, participate in activities after dinner, etc. Also, if we keep 8:15, will we sit alone or with other people? And do they make an effort to sit us with people around our own age?

Traditional dining vs freestyle or "Your Time Dining" or "Anytime Dining" is a matter of personal preference.
Many people do find that it is more difficult to go see the shows when they are not on Traditional dining, since the shows are scheduled around the Traditional meal times.
It is highly likely that you will be assigned to a table with other people if you choose Traditional dining, especially if you have not requested to be seated at your own table. Not all people who ask for their own table get it either since there isn't enough room to have that many small tables.

Carnival Cruise - Dining Question?

We are planning a cruise on the Carnival Splendor this summer. Rummaging through information about dining from various sites, I seem to have a good understanding of the process (i.e. dinning times, main dining room vs other options, etc.). However, a few websites commented that we may be seated with other guests at an assigned table AND the server may wait to see if all guests for a given table show up.
Here is the question: If we opt for an alternative dinning method (e.g. Lido Deck, room service, etc.), how is the main dining room informed of this change (so as not to cause the other guests unnecessary waiting)? Is it true the server tends to wait or is this misinformation?

If you opt for the main dining room and the set times (usually 6 or 8pm) you could be assinged a table with other guests. They do try to put you with someone your own age though. They do NOT wait on the other guests assigned to your table to show up before starting the dining process. When you show up they get your drinks and give you a menu. If someone shows up late, they will get ther drinks and menus when they get there. We showed up about 15 minutes late one time and it was no problem, the other people had already ordered, and we were given our menus and allowed to order.
Just because you have that dining option doesnt mean you HAVE to eat dinner there every night, and some people NEVER do. So no, they dont wait.
